Yu Wei, Female, Professor, Ph.D. tutor. She was born in February 1940. She is currently an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, a member of the Presidium of Chinese Academy of Engineering, a member of National Education Advisory Committee, an honorary member of China Association for Science and Technology, the vice chairman of Chinese Cognitive Society, a special consultant of Shantou University, and a member of IAP-IBSE Council.

Academician Wei obtained her B.S. degree from Nanjing Institute of Technology in 1965, and her Ph.D. in engineering from RWTH Aachen University in 1981. She published over 300 refereed journal articles in the field of electronics and won several scientific and technological achievements awards. Due to her pioneering contribution to bioelectronics in China, she was elected as one of the first academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1994. Academician Wei also received honorary doctorates from nine universities in the United States, England, Japan, and Canada.

Academician Wei was the president of Southeast University from 1984 to 1993. She was the vice Minister of Education from 1993 to 2002. Academician Wei has made important contributions to the reform of higher education and the development of long-distance education in China.

Academician Wei was committed to the establishment of Research Center for Learning Science and Key Laboratory of Child Development and Learning Science (Southeast University), Ministry of Education from 2002 to 2016. She established two doctoral programs in neuroeducation and neural engineering. It is the first in China and also the research frontiers in the world.

From 2001 to 2011, Academician Wei initiated and promoted the inquiry-base science education project of “Learning by Doing” in China. She accomplished the first draft of National Standard for Primary Science Education.

Academician Wei has won the national and international awards including the Special Contribution Award from UN Secretary-General Annan (2004), one of the 60 women who have made special contributions to UNESCO for 60 years, PuRkwa International Children's Science Education Contribution Award (2006), and First Prize of National Basic Education Reform Achievements (2010).

From 2008 to 2016, Academician Wei presided and completed two key strategic research projects related to neural engineering of the Informatics Department of Chinese Academy of Engineering. She proposed the Recommendations on the development of Neural Engineering in China's brain research program. This proposal has been included in the national high-end think tank.

Academician Wei is the author of dozens of books such as Inquiry-based Science Education Teaching Guide, What is Explained by Ten Years of Learning by Doing, Eight Key Points of Family Education for 0-3 Years Old Children. She is a member of international team to write and translate the book Principles and Big Ideas of Science Education and Working with Big Ideas of Science Education. She also published 42 serial papers about brain and education in the journal of Chinese Science and Technology Education.
