STORY
After graduation from high school, Jose was waiting for an opportunity to go to a country where he could be trained appropriately as a medical professional; then lots of recommendations from his friends and siblings made China his first option in the list of possible destinations. As a result, in March 2014, Jose came to China and started his study of Chinese language. "China is big in terms of territory and population while highlighting a diversity of cultures and a remarkable development, which makes it even more attractive. What's more, it was amazing to learn a new language and experience a new culture", he said.
His journey to SEU
2021 · SEU STORY
Jose was attracted by SEU's amazing reputation, very nice studying environment and lots of opportunities.
There're many outstanding things that he's experienced in SEU. Among others, the period of pandemic prevention and control has left a deep impression on him because true love shines more during difficult times. "I experienced care and attention from the teachers and the dorm managers."
During the outbreak of pandemic, only 23 students remained in the dormitory. Loneliness and fear were growing among them. "But the school with a helping hand offered so many psychological counseling sessions and also opened a new store close to the dormitory, which made it convenient for buying daily necessities." Jose participated voluntarily to check daily temperature, which was also a brand-new experience to him.
SEU STORY
Jose participated in many SEU activities, such as the Chinese bridge activities and the SEUIMSA sport week during his bachelor's period.
"Being a SEUer and able to have so many good memories at this place are something that I'm grateful for. I love SEU.", he said.
His journey to be a doctor
2021 · SEU STORY
Since the outbreak of Cholera in his home country in 2002 and after seeing so many people suffering from the disease, Jose started dreaming of becoming a doctor not only for his family but also for his beloved country. Jose has been strongly supported by his teachers. He still remembered his first patient, Mrs. Wu, a patient with COPD and type 2 Respiratory Failure. Jose was aware about what to do, from taking patient's history to adopting possible treatment, but his lack of experience was also evident because he didn't know how to proceed. Thanks to the guidance of his teachers, Jose started step by step linking the knowledge and the practice." I'm really grateful to all my teachers for they support and guidance."
Being a doctor isn't just knowing about diseases and treatments, it's also about being able to socialize with the patients. Jose remembered he once had a patient, a 62 -year-old man who was diagnosed with Pulmonary Embolism and refused any kind of test and medications offered by Jose's seniors and teachers in the department. It was difficult to communicate with him, but for one reason he was open with Jose, so each time when the teachers wanted to tell him something, the communication can only be available through Jose. 5 days later when his disease was stable and he was then discharged from hospital, he said to Jose, "Keep working hard, you will definitely help your country. Thank you, Dr. He (his Chinese name 何塞)."

After my interview with Jose,
I was moved by his deep love for being a doctor and for SEU.
It is more than earning a living to be a doctor,
it is about his dream to save lives.
SEU is more than a place to study at,
it is the exact place where his love for China grows and precious memories stay.
