WANG Jianguo, Professor of Southeast University (SEU), academician of Chinese Academy ofEngineering, national first-class certified architect, Design Master of Jiangsu province, member of World Society for Ekistics (WSE).
Born in July 1957, Wang started his study in the Department of Architecture of Nanjing Institute of Technology in 1978, and received his doctoral degree in SEU in 1989. Since then, he has held a teaching post Architecture Institute and School of Architecture, serving as deputy director, deputy department head, department head, and from 2003 to 2014, the dean of School of Architecture. In 2001, Wang received both Cheung Kong Scholar and National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.
Now Wang is the director of Urban Design Research Center of SEU, director of National Architecture Teaching Advisory Board under Ministry of Education, vice-chairman of Architectural Society of China, vice-chairman of Urban Planning Society of China, vice-chief of Urban Design Experts Committee of Ministry of Housing and Construction, member of the urban planning experts of Xiong’an New Area, and chief-editor of Frontiers of Architectural Research.
Wang has constructed the theory and methodology of modern urban design systematically and integrally for the first time in China. He creatively proposed quantitative methods of guidance and control for rational layout of high-rise buildings in different cities, formed a scientific method for determining the development intensity and volume ratio of urban land, raised and practiced methods of urban landscape design based on dynamic random viewpoint evaluation. With these methods, he has reached preliminary solutions to the urban design problems related to height, density, style optimization, management and control in urban construction. Wang has published 7 treatises and more than 200 papers. lectured at Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), London University College (UCL) and other world-renowned universities, and delivered keynote speeches at 18 international academic conferences such as the World Urban Forum.
Wang has won 1 first prize of Natural Science Award of Ministry of Education(2003), 1 first prize (2013) and 4 second prizes (1998, 2000, 2016, 2017) of the Science and Technology Progress Award of Ministry of Education, 1 first prize of the Science and Technology Awards of HuaXia Construction of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (2018). In the past 30 years, he has hosted more than 100 urban design and architectural design projects in more than 40 cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Zhengzhou, and has won 2 first prizes and 2 second prizes of National Excellent Design Award, 1 first prize and 2 second prizes of National Excellent Urban and Rural Planning Design Award, 7 first prizes of Provincial Excellent Design Award, and 2 international awards.
His teaching achievements have gained the National Teaching Achievement Award, the National Teaching Team, the National Excellent Course, the Special Award of Baosteel Outstanding Teacher Award, the National Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award (mentor) etc... He was awarded the title of National Model Teacher and Teaching Master of Jiangsu Province. In 2016, he was selected in the ‘National Ten-thousand Talents Program’ of Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee .
